Comp Plan Process

What is the Process?

Step #1 Getting Organized: 5:00PM on Tuesday, October 10, 2017

Town Hall, 2056 Middle Street

The Steering Committee will meet with project consultants and staff to review the process for developing the Plan and get organized for this big project.

Members of Council, the Design Review Board, Board of Zoning Appeals and Tree Commission have been invited to this organizational meeting that is open to the public.

Step #2 Public Open House/Visioning Session: 5:00PM on Wednesday, November 8, 2017

Town Hall, 2056 Middle Street

This is the big kick-off for the Comprehensive Plan project where the public meets with the Steering Committee, staff managers and the project consultants from Berkeley Charleston Dorchester Council of Government (BCDCOG). Your input will be sought on a variety of topics.

This is the beginning of a major part of the Plan: visioning for the future.

If you cant make this meeting, or have other ideas after leaving, come to a future Steering Committee meeting or send in your written comments. There will be many opportunities to get public input? a vital part of this project.

Step #3 Steering Committee Meetings held monthly or more often, as needed

Remember every meeting will be open to the public and project progress can be tracked on this project website. At these meetings, the Steering Committee will review proposed element language, discuss and establish needs & goals, and, strategies.

All of these ideas will be compiled for the public review of the draft Plan (Step #4)

Step #4 Presentation of DRAFT Comprehensive Plan (2018) to Public (Public Hearing)

At a minimum, the Planning Commission will hold one public hearing for public review and input on the compiled Comprehensive Plan (2018). This meeting will be widely advertised with at least 15 days advance notice.

Once the Draft Plan is ready for Council review, the project moves to Step #5

Step #5 Presentation of DRAFT Comprehensive Plan (2018) to Council and Public

While the Planning Commission recommends a Comprehensive Plan to Council, ultimately Council approves the document, through an ordinance process. This gives Council and the public at least three opportunities to discuss this draft document.

Step #6 Council Approval and Ratification of New Comprehensive Plan

Once Town Council has fully reviewed and ratified the Plan, it becomes the official Town of Sullivans Island Comprehensive Plan.

Remember, the Plan can be reviewed as needed, but at a minimum is evaluated every 5 years and fully updated every 10 years.
